The Haidas

Hi,

Today I am going to be showing and telling you about my social studies project. My groups project was abou The Haidas. I was told to a paragraph or 2 about the Haidas social organizations. I learnt some very cool facts in the making of this project, like,

1.Haida Gwaii is a group of islands containing about 150 islands in a sword-like shape that is 250 km long.

2.Haida Gwaii escaped glaciation during the last ice age.

3.Most of The Haida tribe lives on the coastal bay of Haida Gwaii in British Columbia.

4.The Haida community speaks a language called Xaad kil.

5.In 2016, there were 445 people who spoke Xaad kil.

6.The Haida live in shelters built on the water.

7. To travel to different island, The Haida used cedar trees for canoes and boats.

8. They have a tradition called Potlach, where the host gives presents instead of the guests.

9. The adults in The Haida community, would tell stories with dances and songs.

10. The Haida group lived on Haida Gwaii for at least 6000 to 8000 years.

I think my group did an awsome job with researching. We learnt so much!  The Haidas community is unique and very special. That is why I really think that learning more about various indigenous communities, would really benefit us. I teaches you diversity, and how different people live. If we stop learning about these communitys, we won’t know the importance of history. I also think learning about this is important because if we learn about it, their traditions and religions will be passed down, and known.

What makes The Haidas very diverse is their way of living. It is unique. Each house live up to 30-40 people. In the Chief’s house, lives some homeless people. Everyone takes care of eachother. Their tradition, The Potlatch, is what I think is the most diverse. In this tradition you can either celebrate or mourn. Celebrating is someone built a house, got married, and lots more. The mourning part is if you lost a loved one. This tradition is very interesting, and awesome. In this tradition they also dance and sing to tell eachother stories. I would personally like to see how they celebrate the Potlatch. It sounds great!

I would love to learn more about The Haida’s traditions. I loved learning about The Potlach, so it sounds amazing, and very intresting. I have never seen anything like their traditions and ways of living.

I would love to learn more about The Haida traditions. I liked learning about The Potlatch, so it sounds amazing, and very interesting. I have never seen anything like their traditions and ways of living.

You have heard me talk a lot about The Haidas, so instead of talking even more, I should just show you instead.

Here is my group and I’s project.

Bar/Bat Mitzvas

When you reach the age of a bar or bat mitzva, you earn more responsibilities. The responsibilities include, being more aware of your actions, honor the elederly community more, honor you parents/family more, have more respect for people, and ext…

Using a Tallit and Teffilin is important because it reminds you in the way you serve G-d. Also, when you put on a Tallit and Tefillin you feel more connected to G-d.

What I think is very intresting about bar/bat mitzvas is that people celebrate it in different and unique ways, and it makes bar and bat mitzvas even more special.

The only questions that I still have is,

Is there a particular reason girls celebrate their bat mitvas in the age of 12?

Why not 11 or 13?

In conclousion, I am very glad I learnt about all the different traditions jewish people have in their bat or bar mitzvas.

Innovation Day Reflection

In this innovation day project I learnt that electricity projects are lots of fun. I personally thought that this project had it’s ups and downs, but my partner and I always had fun building and researching different things. Most of the ups were how fun the experiment and the building was. The downs started happening when we got closer to the due date of the project. I got really stressed about finishing everything on time. On Innovation day, I was scared about presenting my project in front of the judges. After the first judge, I started feeling more confident. It got easier each time. I am proud of the way I dealt with problems throughout the project. The way I delt with them was working hard, and not only working on the project at school, put also working on it at home. My partner and I kept perfecting the project throughout the 3 weeks that we had to work on it. I have to say, I am surprised how good I felt after presenting to the judges. In conclusion, innovation day was really fun and challenging in a good way.

Canada A Diverse Nation

Hi!

Today I am going to be telling you why Canada is a diverse nation.

Canada is a very interesting and diverse place. There are 2 official languages, which are French and English. There are 38 million people who currently live in Canada, However, lots of people that live outside of Canada, love to travel around Canada. In Canada there’s lots of water, snow, wildlife, beaches, mountains, and lots of nature. There are many different places that make Canada diverse.

An example is PEI (Prince Edward Island). PEI is an island that is surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. It offers lots of beaches, parks, hikes, and more! There are lots of Forests and cliffs, and people love to go fishing.

British Columbia, on the other hand, Has countless mountains, bridges, and beautiful water. Altho British Columbia has the most mountains in Canada, It also has a city in it named Vancouver, that has lots of Museums, gardens, Chinatown, concerts, and places to hike.

I think the last 2 examples I should use, HAS to be Nunavut and Ontario. Nunavut’s population is 40,673 and Ontario’s population is 15.6 million people! The two provinces have a very big difference in the amount of people for a reason. That reason is that Nunavut, compared to Ontario, has SO MUCH snow, and it’s very cold. There is only one city in Nunavut which is the capital Iqaluit.  But it’s not really a city. It doesn’t have any apartments, and there are barely any stores or restaurants. Most of the population of Nunavut are the Inuit people, but Ontario has different kinds of people and beliefs. Ontario has so so so many restaurants and stores to get food, but hunting is one of the only ways you can get food in Nunavut. In Ontario the main languages are French and English, Inuktut, English, and French are the official languages of Nunavut.

Diversity is so important because having differences makes you or things very unique, and special. Diversity allows different people with various skill sets to contribute to our community. So remember, being diverse is great!
